Making God My First Priority
Social media has become such a large part of our lives and it can be very easy to make it our first priority. As a society, we spend way more time scrolling through posts than we do learning from God’s Word. I fell into that trap and recently God taught me how important it is that He is always my first priority. Nothing on this earth is more important than our personal relationship with God.
Have you ever struggled to feel close to God? I recently spent a couple of weeks struggling to feel close to Him. Nothing I tried seemed to work and I was confused about why God felt so far away. I missed the feeling of being close to Him and I knew something needed to change in me so that I could again feel His presence.
I tried reading my Bible more, praying more, and praying for God to help me feel His presence. Those things did help a little but I still felt further away from God than I normally do. Then I realized how much time I was spending on Instagram. Even though all of my time was spent on Christian accounts, it was time spent filling my head with words from people other than God.
Eventually, I felt like God wanted me to spend some time away from social media so I did. I only took one day off but it was so helpful and exactly what I needed. I realized I was spending so much time filling my head with other voices that I was losing God’s voice. There were too many other voices blocking out His and that left me feeling confused. I needed to refocus my mind on God’s Word and His voice instead of the voices of the people I follow.
After taking time away from social media, I feel farther away from the people I follow. Instead, I feel way closer to God. That’s what is important. It is the sacrifice we need to make when we want to give all of our time to God. God should be most important in our lives and we should always be willing to give up our earthly things to spend time with Him.
Since this experience, I have made it my goal to spend time in God’s Word before going on social media. Instead of making my Bible reading the last thing I do in the day, I make it my first thing. God always needs to come first. I make sure I am in a good place in my relationship with God before I scroll through Instagram and take in the opinions of other people.
I am not saying that you can’t spend any time on social media, but if that is taking up most of your time you should probably start limiting your time. Since this experience, I try to only look at a couple of posts each time I go on Instagram. It is enough to help me support others and it still allows me time to spend with God. Like most things in life, it is a balance. God’s voice must always be more important than all other voices.
If you want to feel close to God, give Him all your attention. Spend some time away from social media if you feel that you need to. It might only be a day, it is all up to what you feel that you need to do. For me one day was enough and just that one day made all the difference. God used that one day to teach me a very important lesson. Your attention should always be on God more than it is on words from other Christians. He should always be our number one priority.
Wise words from a beautiful, rapidly maturing adult! I am proud of you, Sammie Rose.
